The only 2026 Chinese web novel statistics compilation: every figure carries a named source and check date, from market size to AI translation adoption.
China's web novel reading market reached RMB 50.21 billion in 2025, up 16.6% year-on-year, and its IP adaptation market hit RMB 367.61 billion, per the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Overseas active readers passed 200 million (China Writers Association, CASS; 2025). Every figure in this statistics compilation carries its source, its year, and a verification date of August 2026.
That sourcing discipline is the point of this page. English results for "chinese web novel statistics" still surface 2022–2024 figures with no sources at all, while the 2025–2026 first-hand data sits in Chinese-language reports. This post compiles those reports into one citable reference across four source tiers — industry associations (CADPA), academic institutions (CASS Institute of Literature), listed-company filings (China Literature), and established media (CGTN, China Daily, People's Daily) — the last labeled as secondary citations. Volatile figures are dated; where definitions of the same metric disagree, both appear.

The companion is qualitative: our 2026 trends report covers what is driving reader taste this year; this page exists so those claims have numbers with paper trails.
Two headline figures describe market size, and they are not interchangeable.
The reading market — money spent by readers on web novels — reached RMB 50.21 billion in 2025, up 16.6% year over year, according to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Institute of Literature's "2025 Report on the Development of Chinese Online Literature," released April 13, 2026.
Platform revenue — main business income from subscriptions, advertising, licensing, and deep development — was RMB 49.55 billion in 2024, up 29.37% and accelerating for a third consecutive year, per the China Audio-video and Digital Publishing Association's "2024 Annual Report on the Development of Chinese Online Literature," released July 17, 2025.
These are different definitions in different years, and no growth rate can bridge them, so this page does not attempt one. One forward-looking data point: CADPA chairman Sun Shoushan estimated in January 2026 that 2025 total industry revenue would exceed RMB 50 billion and overseas revenue RMB 5 billion; those are estimates pending audited figures in the CADPA 2025 annual report.
User counts depend entirely on who is counting. CADPA reported 638 million online literature users in 2024, up 16% to an all-time high, tied in its report to the spread of short-drama adaptations. CNNIC, which measures internet users who read web novels, reported 575 million in December 2024 (51.9% of netizens), 513 million in June 2025 (45.7%), and 526 million in December 2025 (46.7%).
The 575-to-513 shift coincides with a likely measurement discontinuity: CNNIC published no note explaining it, and the Dec-2024 reading sits above both adjacent readings — so the figures should not be read as a decline. The gap between CADPA's 638 million and CNNIC's 526 million is the same story — platform accounts versus individual internet users.
Creators and works: CASS counted 32.69 million authors in 2025 (up 1.496 million) and 45.84 million works (up 4.186 million); CADPA counted 30.30 million resident authors in 2024 (up 3.44%) and 42.1 million works excluding duplicate licenses and delisted titles (up 11.19%). China Literature's 2025 results add pipeline detail: 400,000 new authors, 800,000+ new books, 42 billion new characters across China Literature's platforms; post-1995 authors made up 70% of new signings, and post-2000 authors earning RMB 1 million a year grew 150%.
Adaptation is where web novels stop being text. The IP adaptation market reached RMB 367.61 billion in 2025, up 23.13% (CASS). CADPA counted 83,250 works adapted in 2024, up 14.55%.
The short-drama spillover shows in the CASS report: the micro-drama market reached RMB 108 billion in 2025, up 110%, with 850 million+ users — per the CASS report (which does not name an underlying source). AI-animated drama was a separate RMB 18.98 billion market with 75.7 billion cumulative plays in 2025 (CASS). China Literature reported IP merchandise GMV above RMB 1.1 billion in 2025, more than double 2024, and roughly 1,000 AI-animated series in the second half of 2025, 100+ of which passed 10 million plays and 12 passed 100 million.
One non-financial marker: the British Library has added 38 Chinese web novels to its collection across three intake rounds since 2022, 12 in 2025 (CASS).
CASS reported overseas market size rising from RMB 5.07 billion in 2024 (+16.5%) to RMB 5.64 billion in 2025 (+11.2%); CADPA reported 2024 overseas platform revenue of RMB 4.815 billion (+10.68%, $683.8 million per the "2025 Overseas Trends Report," Fourth Shanghai International Online Literature Week, December 2025) under a different caliber — the two series are not directly comparable.
Scale: roughly 200 million active overseas readers across 200+ countries and regions, a figure three sources converge on — the China Writers Association's international communication report (September 2025, reported by CGTN), the CASS report, and People's Daily Overseas Edition (October 9, 2025). WebNovel (Qidian International) reports about 400 million cumulative visits, 530,000 overseas original authors, 820,000+ overseas original works, and 538 works past 10 million reads as of October 31, 2025 (CASS). Outside WebNovel, 1.3 million local authors have produced 2 million+ local works (CASS; People's Daily).
Where the readers are: Asia holds 80% of global readers and more than half of market share, North America about 30% (CASS). Latin America is the fastest-growing block — 9 of the top 10 countries by WebNovel MAU growth in 2025 were Latin American, with Brazil up 779%, while US user scale grew 91% (CASS). CADPA reported Southeast Asia as the top overseas region for a second consecutive year in 2024. Overseas distribution runs to about 5,000 printed titles and 130,000+ ebooks across 200+ countries and regions (CWA; People's Daily).
The 2025–2026 data is the first to show AI translation as an industrial production method; the marginal-experiment phase is over.
China Literature's annual results, announced March 17, 2026, report 17,000+ cumulative AI-translated works on WebNovel by end of 2025 — a platform-cumulative figure, not an industry total — with AI translation revenue up 39%, contributing over a third of the platform's total revenue. The CWA international communication report adds that on most platforms, half or more of translated works are AI-completed, with cost down more than 90% on the platforms that report it; the same report counted 7,200+ AI-translated titles on WebNovel as of September 2025, more than 70% of its translated catalog. The two counts differ by timing: 7,200+ as of September 2025, 17,000+ by December 2025.
Language coverage is the sharpest signal. Small-language translation volume in October 2025 was 3.5 times its 2024 level, with Indonesian up 349%, Spanish up 336%, and Portuguese up 278% (CASS). Commercial validation exists: the AI-translated Wan Shi Zhi Ming (万世之名) entered WebNovel's overall revenue top 19 (CASS). That is a market outcome, not a quality verdict.
For the product-level numbers behind this — per-chapter cost after the 90%+ reduction, and where machine output still fails — my cost analysis and the human-versus-machine comparison cover the reader-facing side, and the genre-level accuracy data shows where the gap narrows and where it stays.
One company carries a large share of these numbers, and its own 2025 results are worth reading separately: total revenue RMB 7.366 billion, down 9.3%; online business RMB 4.047 billion, up 0.4% and 54.9% of the total; IP operations and other RMB 3.319 billion. Average MAU across self-operated products and channels was 137.8 million (self-operated 104.1 million, stable; Tencent channels 33.7 million), average MPU 9 million, and paid monthly ARPU up 2.8% to RMB 32.9. Lord of the Mysteries and Da Feng Da Geng Ren both passed 300,000 average subscriptions, a Qidian first-run record, per the company's filing.
The shape behind the levels is the story: revenue fell 9.3% entirely on the IP side while the online core inched up 0.4% — and the concentration is real, with one listed company anchoring the 17,000+ AI-translated works and 400 million cumulative visits above. Treat those as company-level figures unless the source says otherwise.
The platform comparison maps the same landscape by site rather than by financial statement.
Four source tiers carry this page, in descending order of weight: (1) industry association reports (CADPA), based on consistent data from 35 major domestic companies plus a 37,000-user survey; (2) academic reports (CASS Institute of Literature); (3) listed-company filings (China Literature); (4) established media (CGTN, China Daily, People's Daily), used as secondary citations of the reports above and labeled as such. All RMB figures use 1亿元 = RMB 100 million.
Four definitional gaps recur, and each is stated rather than resolved:
| Disagreement | Numbers | Why they differ |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue vs. reading market | RMB 49.55 bn (2024, CADPA) vs. RMB 50.21 bn (2025, CASS) | Different year, different definition; no growth rate can be derived |
| User scale | 638M (2024, CADPA) vs. 575M / 513M / 526M (CNNIC, Dec 2024 / Jun 2025 / Dec 2025) | Platform-account count vs. internet-user count; the mid-2025 reading is a likely measurement discontinuity CNNIC never explained |
| Work totals | 33M+ (end-2024, CWA, 50 platforms, raw count) vs. 42.1M (2024, CADPA) vs. 45.84M (2025, CASS) | Raw count (CWA) vs. CADPA's deduplicated count after removing duplicate licenses and delisted titles; CASS's deduplication status unstated |
| Overseas revenue | RMB 5.07 bn (2024) → RMB 5.64 bn (2025, CASS) vs. RMB 4.815 bn (2024, CADPA) | CASS measures market size, CADPA platform revenue — two calibers, not directly comparable |
AI translation scale follows the same pattern: 17,000+ (WebNovel cumulative, end 2025) and 7,200+ (September 2025) are snapshots of the same catalog at different dates, while "half or more of translations on most platforms" is the CWA's industry-level claim.
Update policy: every volatile figure carries an "as of August 2026" check date, last verified August 5, 2026, and the page is re-verified after each annual release — CADPA (July), CASS (April), China Literature (March), CNNIC (January/February and August). The chairman's January 2026 estimates are replaced by audited figures when the CADPA 2025 annual report publishes.
The takeaway is modest and specific. The 2025–2026 reports are the first to show AI translation as an export mechanism with measurable revenue, and the first in which Latin America and small languages, not the US, lead growth. For English readers, those 17,000+ AI-translated works are a reading inventory that did not exist at scale two years ago.
If these numbers make you want to read the novels behind them, our guide to finding Chinese web novels maps where English readers can actually access them.
The reading market was RMB 50.21 billion in 2025, up 16.6% (CASS), and platform revenue RMB 49.55 billion in 2024, up 29.37% (CADPA); the definitions and years differ, so no single growth rate exists.
CADPA counted 638 million users in 2024, while CNNIC counted 526 million as of December 2025; the difference is definitional — platform accounts versus individual internet users — and CNNIC's 513 million reading for June 2025 coincides with a likely measurement discontinuity rather than a decline.
Counts: 45.84 million works in 2025 (CASS; deduplication status unstated) and 42.1 million in 2024 (CADPA, deduplicated); the China Writers Association's raw count across 50 major platforms was 33 million+ as of end-2024.
About 200 million active readers across 200+ countries and regions, per the China Writers Association (2025), the CASS report, and People's Daily; WebNovel alone reports about 400 million cumulative visits.
All figures were verified as of August 5, 2026, with source and year attached; estimates are labeled and will be replaced when the CADPA 2025 annual report publishes.
